Are you considering buying an alarm system from SimpliSafe? If you are, you must read this article - It'll tell you exactly why you should choose FrontPoint Security for your home protection instead.

The Basics

Both FrontPoint and SimpliSafe offer 100% wireless security systems. These have a number of advantages over traditional alarm panels that connect to the monitoring center through your phone line. The main benefit of a wireless system is security – it’s too easy to disable a traditional alarm by simply cutting the phone cables where they enter your property.

Both SimpliSafe and FrontPoint have overcome that by supplying panels that stay in touch with the outside world through their own secure cellular connections. They both also have backup batteries, so they’ll keep working even if there’s a power outage.

However, SimpliSafe's wireless equipment has been reported by many customers as being "cheap" and feeble with persistent issues regarding their wireless performance.

Both companies offer standard panels that include very much the same features, including master arming controls. But FrontPoint provides customers with industry-standard GE Security wireless equipment (that includes a GE Simon XT control panel) while SimpliSafe uses its own proprietary equipment. FrontPoint also offers a touch screen panel that can be placed anywhere in your home. It’s extremely easy to use, and works very well placed just inside the front door or a bedroom. The convenient icon-based menu allows various system settings to be quickly selected as you enter or leave your home.

FrontPoint’s systems have a big advantage in terms of smartphone monitoring. Through an app on your smartphone you can control your entire home security system. This includes being able to lock and unlock your main doors remotely (from work) to let someone or yourself in, the ability to know when a door sensor or window sensor detects movement, watch live video of the inside and outside of your home (from wherever you have placed your cameras) and have access to the entire history of your home security activity.

You can also choose to receive images or video clips – if you want, you can set the system up to send you a photo of everyone who comes in the front door.

SimpliSafe on the other hand only offers a cellular connection, whose sole purpose is to report an alarm to the central station. That is, instead of using a landline, SimpliSafe's home security systems use a cellular line in order to dial the central station's phone number in the event of an emergency. With FrontPoint however, cellular monitoring is a given, as none of their security systems work with landlines anyway.

Support

Modern security equipment is easy to install, and the use of wireless components means there’s no need for drilling and cabling. This means that in most cases you can set up your security system yourself. That’s lucky if you choose SimpliSafe, because DIY is the only option you have. Most people will be able to install a FrontPoint system too – it’s just as simple – but if required you can get advice and assistance from one of their security consultants.

FrontPoint support also scores well when it comes to looking after their equipment. You get a 2 year warranty on all components.

Conclusion

SimpliSafe have put together a basic security system based around wireless technology, so it overcomes the drawbacks of older alarm packages but in terms of features and reliability, it lags badly behind FrontPoint, however. We were particularly impressed with how well FrontPoint integrates video cameras into every aspect of the monitoring process. Motion-detecting cameras can trigger alerts, activate the alarm and send snapshots directly to your phone. SimpliSafe gives you the basics; FrontPoint gives you what a 21st century security system should be.
